Details of an Overseas Jobs Scam

Many people have written to ask about a site for a company called Nels Finance Corp (actually you’ll see it’s at least 12 sites) offering all types of overseas jobs. But when you submit your resume to them, you receive an email back saying that you’re required to get something called an “International Background Report” or something similar usually costing between $100-200.

So what’s the deal? How does this work?

I decided to look into this much closer because one part of the jobs listed for the convenience of dangerzonejobs members comes from Indeed.com and these scam jobs appear through that site.

After asking people to send me copies of the emails and doing a lot of research on the web, I think I can paint a fairly clear picture for you to help you avoid this scam.

So let’s take it step by step.

Many of the posts/sites that come up around the web about DangerZoneJobs.com being a scam are related to this article. If you read the article and the comments, you can understand why the individual(s) concerned have since published so many completely false accusations on different fake sites. They are still active using other fake sites, but now hide their ownership behind anonymous proxy services. So be careful.

Stumbling Upon The OfferIf you search Google looking for overseas jobs, you might run across their listings on indeed.com or in some cases, the scam sites themselves show up in the listings. Here’s an example of one of the job ads that you might find. The sites I have tracked down that try to get you to pay for “International Background Reports” include (all from the same person):

  1. AccurateGlobalReports.com
  2. AmericanOverseasEmployment.com
  3. ApplicantRecruiter.com
  4. CorporateInvestigativeServices.com
  5. GlobalEmploymentSearch.com
  6. InternationalPersonnelManagers.com
  7. InternationalRecordsResearch.com
  8. NelsFinance.com
  9. OverseasJobsOnly.com
  10. UnitedStatesJobsAlliance.com
  11. UnitedStatesRetailGroup.com
  12. WorldwideResearchAssociates.com
  13. WorldwideEmploymentResources.com

One of the things these sites all have in common is their hosting.

  • The host listed is either floridabeachguyhosting.com, which shows one of the companies above, Nels Finance Corporation, as it’s registrant.
  • Or there is also seabrookhosting.com which uses a different registrant name, but the same email and street address.
  • When I googled some of the addresses given, I was able to see everything from empty lots to a public library branch.
  • The main name involved, NELS FINANCE CORP, gives their address as 1739 Maybank Hwy, Suite T-393 Charleston, SC 29412-2103. The address is in fact a postal box in a Pakmail store located at 1739 Maybank Hwy #T in Charleston SC.: http://www.pakmailcharleston.com/

The sites are either designed to have you submit your resume or to buy an “international background report” directly.

The sites which are trying to get your information make it sound like they have high-paying overseas jobs in several different categories just waiting for you. All you have to do is submit your resume. When you do, within a couple days you’ll receive an email saying a job is waiting for you (keep in mind there are several different versions of this email, but they are essentially the same).

They claim these reports are required for international and overseas jobs. They even say they will deliver this comprehensive report directly to the overseas employer within 12 hours.

One of our members sent me this actual email they received for a supposed security guard job two days after submitting their resume. The email is left formatted as sent, mistakes and all:

You really did your leg work on that one, the article was in depth and well written. Thank you for taking the time to do that, it is refreshing in this day and age to see these kind of ethics in a job search corporation. The information was spot on, and mirrors what I found in my investigation of the sources. I am still running into scam sites like this through a multitude of job search sites, and thus far Dangerzonejobs was the only one that made it part of their agenda to get it fixed. I have told several freinds about your website, and continue to preach about the information and treatment within your site.

    Great job and thanks!

  2. DZJeditor July 14, 2012 at 10:57 am

Thanks Chris. I appreciate your comments and if you (or anyone else) runs across other overseas jobs scams like this, please let me know. I will continue looking into them.

  12. david September 4, 2012 at 4:16 pm

Well after reading these posts now I know it is a scam. When I first put in and got the job offer I was excited and scared at the same time. I felt it was a scam, but wanted to take a chance. These mutha feffers will burn. Kharma is a bitch.

  13. Sam September 14, 2012 at 1:33 pm

I’ve received some of the exact same emails from Robert Shinkle.  I did a little tour of their website (s) and now I am absolutely convinced that they are scam artists.  They posted a response claiming that it proves they are legit, but the entire tone seems directed to ignorant folks that think “shit talking” proves a point.http://www.nelsfinance.com/scam.htm

  14. Sam September 15, 2012 at 3:40 pm

I am still curious WHY their adds still show up on dangerzonejobs….. I counted no less than 5 different active postings by this group.

  15. DZJeditor September 15, 2012 at 4:15 pm

Hey Sam, good question. and here’s the answer. On our job board, we added a feature for the convenience of our members which is feed from a site called simplyhired.com. That site goes out on the web and brings together jobs from lots of different sources. I then set the feed to send us results for keywords like overseas jobs, jobs in iraq and so on. The problem is I can’t filter out specific job postings from them. You’re right, these guys’ job posts show up, which is why I wrote this long post about them. I can’t block them so I tried to let our site users know as much as possible about what is going on. Does that make sense?

  16. michael September 19, 2012 at 2:42 am

this whole $179 thing sounds like a scam what kind of international investigative report cost only 179.00 that sounds too cheap, if a person qualifies then the company would be more than happy to pay for him/her to do a background check, I have called /www.internationalrecordsresearch.com 843 number and I asked him about which country I am getting the offer from he said that he cant tell me. a quick note  you should never pay for a hiring agency to get a job, they have all the tools to screen and investigate people.

  17. John Culpepper September 24, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Just got an email from  this ass hat (Robert Shinkle)”worldwideemploymentresourses.com”  Same format as mentioned from you guys above. So I sent him an email letting him know that his site was a scam and was being reported to keep people from falling for this garbage.  Thanks for all your hard work to expose these idiots!  keep up the good work!!

  18. Joe September 29, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Folks I have to say I fell for the BS Robert SKANKLE was putting out. I have been out of work since Jan 2012 and got a bit to excited that I didnt take the damn time to check this out!  I am( usually) a die hard Pay Attention To Detail type but they got me!  How can we stop these people? Does anyone know any real overseas security companies hiring now?  I hope more folks get to read these post before they wind up like me!  thanks for listening.

    Worldwide Security Resources
They are trying the same routine in Australia and on our jobsites.
Same thing I was keen to get back to the Middle East after spending 10 years there and stuck my resume(CV) in but haven’t heard back yet – thanks for the heads up and I should have just stuck with Danger Zone. ps. I found this on their website as business address:
    1739 Maybank Hywy. Suite T-393
    Charleston South Carolina 29412
    Phone: 1-866-711-7791

    From Worldwide Employment resources address:
1739 Maybank Hwy, Charleston, South Carolina 29412, United States
Check out Google Earth and it comes up to a shopping centre with carpark.
So people staty away from this mob – unless they are running a tacto bell as well or something???

  29. James January 3, 2013 at 5:04 pm

Unfortunately, I fell for it too.  Kept calling and talking to the same old man and listened to all his promises.  Very disappointed that nothing has been done to criminally prosecute this individual.  He’s taking money from people that don’t have the money but do have a dream to financially support their families.  If anyone has legitimate information regarding overseas security jobs, please feel free to email me the information.

  30. Pete January 8th January 8, 2013 at 3:03 am

Got done, How do you go about chasing his a….. Wouldn’t it be the role of the advertising company to make sure that these companys are legit. Why are the job seekers made to absorb the scam.  Can someone help out with Overseas Assigments ??

  31. Richard January 23, 2013 at 5:31 pm

Base rule of the ages.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  Just a simple internet search using some of the phrases in a suspect email will readily identify them as scams or possible scams.  Also referencing a good WHOIS database online will show discrepancies in most of these, grammar mistakes, spelling errors, etc.  Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  32. Mike January 23, 2013 at 6:09 pm

Thank you for this very in-depth information! I received this “job offer” today as well from Mr. Shinkle. I have another tip for those seeking overseas employment…No job ever makes you pay for any service as a condition for employment. The employer pays for everything (i.e. background checks, flights, etc.). Hope this helps!

  36. Scott Word February 4, 2013 at 5:40 pm

I want to thank everyone for their input. I was just about to look into Worldwide Employment Resource . However, I know not to ever send money to get hired. Thanks to DJZ for doing their part to protect us who have protected and served in Armed Forces and protected A..holes like Robert Shinkle. I think there might be
another site, International Employment.com offering the exact same thing. Not sure if its related. What I have not seen is anyone giving a list of reputable companies that actually hire for the overseas security jobs. Maybe DJZ could shed some light on that?

  37. Ben February 4, 2013 at 6:53 pm

And now it looks like they have found out about DZJ looking into them and giving people a heads up, http://www.worldwideemploymentresources.com
